This visa might be for you if you wish to transit through Australia but do not qualify for transit without a visa or if you plan to travel to Australia to join a vessel as crew. You need a Transit Visa even if you fly out on the same aircraft and from the same airport at which you arrived or you stay in the transit lounge and do not leave the airport. This type of visa is free of charge. It does not allow you to work and study in Australia.
Requirements for a Transit Visa
For people transiting to Australia, you must provide the following:
- Your passport valid for travel to Australia;
- Your recent passport size photo which must be signed at the back;
- Your itinerary;
- Your confirmed onward booking to continue your travel from Australia to a third country within 72 hours of arrival;
- Correct documentation (visa) for entry to a third country.
For people transiting to join a vessel as a crew member, you must submit the following:
- Your passport and another document that identifies you as a Seafarer;
- The following details are to be supplied by the local shipping/handling agent:
- The names of the persons joining the vessel as crew
- The names of the persons they are replacing
- The name of their vessel
- The date of arrival in Australia of the persons to be visaed
- The port and date they are expected to join the vessel
- If they are not the vessel’s owner, a copy of the request for crew from the vessel’s agent in Australia. The request should contain the details of the crew members applying for visas.

How do you Apply for a Transit Visa
If you have the above requirements, you or your Migration Agent are now ready to apply for a Transit Visa. First, you have to complete Form 876, Application for transit visa for Australia. Then attach all the supporting documents and lodge the application either by post, by courier or in person. You must submit a complete application so that it will be processed quickly. You may be asked to submit additional requirements and you should provide them within the period of time the Department gave you. If you cannot provide this information or requirement, your application will be decided based on the documents you have submitted.
Once your visa is granted, you must remember that you can stay in Australia for no longer than 72 hours. You can only transit through Australia and your visa cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer than 72 hours in Australia, you must apply for another type of visa.
