This visa might be for you if you are aged 18 to 30 and want to travel and work for up to 12 months in Australia. This visa allows you to engage in casual or temporary work during your holiday. The Work and Holiday visa is designed to encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between countries which support this program. It also promotes mutual understanding between Australia and other nations which is an important part of the tourist industry.
These countries include Bangladesh, Chile, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey and the U.S.A. Since Iran is no longer included in the program, Iranian citizens are not allowed to apply. However, if the Iranian citizens are already in Australia on a Work and Holiday visa, they may be eligible to apply for extension of their visa for up to two further Work and Holiday visas.
Criteria for a Work and Holiday Visa
Your main reason for travelling to Australia must be for a holiday. Any work you undertake should only be to support yourself while you are on holiday. You must have a return ticket or an onward fare and must have sufficient funds for the first part of your holiday.
You are permitted to stay for twelve months from date of arrival in Australia.
Example requirements for a Work and Holiday Visa
- You must be aged between 18 – 30 years at time of application;
- You must hold a valid passport from the countries which support this program – your passport must be valid for at least six months;
- You must pay the appropriate visa application charge;
- You must meet educational requirements – if you are from countries other than the U.S.A., you must hold tertiary qualifications; if you are a U.S. passport holder, you must have graduated from high school;
- You must have functional English if you are from any one of the countries listed above except the U.S. – you have to provide evidence of this;
- You must submit a support letter from your home government;
- You must not be accompanied by dependent children;
- You must provide evidence of funds to support yourself for the initial stage of your holiday;
- You must meet health requirements – you may be asked to undergo medical examination depending of your circumstances;
- You must meet character requirements – you may be asked to submit a police clearance;
- You must take out a health insurance while in Australia since medical treatment can be expensive;
- You must respect the Australian values and obey the laws of Australia – you will be asked to sign a declaration when you complete the application form.

Conditions of Work and Study Visas
You are allowed to do any kind of casual or temporary work only as the main reason for your visit to Australia is for a holiday and travel. You can only work for six months with one employer. And you can study or train for up to four months.
Once the Work and Study visa is granted, you must enter Australia within three months of the date of approval.
If your visa is not granted, you will receive notification advising the reasons for the refusal and giving you visa options to consider.
