Quit your job

Although frightening, quitting your job is pretty easy.

Assuming you haven’t told your boss about your migration plans yet, he or she will be quite surprised. However, because your reason is immigration, they will be supportive of your decision! You wait and see!

The reason is easy: Everyone dreams about traveling the world and it’s not that you are going to work for the competitor? (Or are you? J). This makes the decision much easier to bear and people coming and leaving the company is a normal part of doing business.

In Australia, it’s very important to have references. So make sure you get as many positive references as possible because time differences, prohibited international calls and “I just cannot be bothered” make it hard for employers to get your references and might settle for one of your competitor applicants. Here are good examples of Letters of recommendation.

Obviously the same basic rules apply for leaving the company for relocation as for “just” changing employers, so give them notice, talk to you mangers personally before sending him the letter, hand over your job properly and clean up before you go. Depending on your relationship with you collegues, you can even invite them to your farewell party.

To make it even easier, you can use the resignation letter because of immigration below. Obviously you need to tailor it for you own situation, but I’m confident this straw man can get you 80% of the way there.

Dear Mr Schmidt,

As we discussed I am having mixed feelings while informing you that I will be leaving my position of CEO at Google Inc on March the 1st 2034 as I am relocating to Hawaii.

On the one hand I’m excited about the life changing opportunities awaiting me and my loved ones.

But on the other hand I feel sad to leave the team that I’ve been part of for so long. I appreciated working with such wonderful colleagues and have learned so much the last past few years.

I will be pleased to liaise with whoever will be taking over my responsibilities. I look forward to working with management and the team to ensure a smooth transition.

Yours sincerely
